Role summary

The tax manager is responsible for strategic tax planning and managing tax reporting, and compliance.  Oversees the completion of timely and accurate tax returns. Must be familiar with and stay current on tax laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local level.  The tax manager will have significant interaction across the various entities and divisions and with all levels of personnel. This person must rely on tax expertise, experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.  Manages tax staff in completion of goals.  Duties will include special project work.


Essential duties and responsibilities of this tax manager include the following:

  • Special tax projects including research, analysis and planning associated with acquisitions and divestitures, growth strategies, business changes and tax law changes.

  • Responsible for ensuring that Pella Corporation is in compliance with all federal, state and local tax laws.  This includes developing a thorough understanding of subsidiary/division operations to insure their compliance.

  • Responsible for overseeing the accurate and timely preparation of the following tax returns for Pella Corporation and its subsidiaries:

    • Federal and state income tax

    • Franchise tax

    • Estimated tax payments

    • Sales and use tax

    • Property tax

    • Other

  • Responsible for overseeing the maintenance of appropriate schedules and other records necessary for tracking all book and tax timing differences.  This includes accounting for income taxes and the preparation of all required year-end tax audit work papers.

  • Responsible for forecasting and budgeting. 

  • Transactional analysis, tax planning, research and implementation of ideas, policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for managing tax audits and responding to notices and inquiries from governmental tax authorities.

  • Assist Tax Director with completion of all duties of the tax department which includes non-income tax functions in addition to income tax.


Supervisory responsibilities:

Supervises tax staff on projects.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Job qualifications for this tax manager include the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university; and minimum five years of tax experience.  A CPA is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex tax laws, regulations and court cases, common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 

  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. 

  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  • Proficient in Word, Excel and Power Point. Income tax software (ProSystems), Oracle and Hyperion, Sales tax software (Vertex).

  • CPA not required but preferred.
