This Senior Research and Development Engineer is responsible for coordination of complex and multi-disciplined engineering projects from concept to implementation.  This role will approve product/process design and prepare engineering documents such as cost estimates, appropriation requests, project schedules, design specifications, instruction specifications, purchase requisitions, operating manuals, and technical reports.  This Senior R&D Engineer is an expert resource across the organization, providing technical information, leadership, and engineering recommendations that influence initiatives.


Job duties for this Senior Research and Development Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Areas of expertise preferred: fiberglass pultrusion, vinyl extrusion, injection molding, aluminum extrusion, paint & coatings, sealants, and adhesives
  • Scouting, evaluating, and applying new technology to new or existing products and processes.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with outside vendors, industry associations, and third-party partners
  • Leading and contributing to complex projects and responsible for the advancement and application of engineering technologies and processes
  • Developing and applying knowledge across multiple disciplines throughout the organization in the area of materials
  • Assessing the feasibility and soundness of proposed approaches, techniques or equipment when necessary data are insufficient 
  • Performing as an advisor and consultant relative to a scientific or engineering specialty or a product function 
  • Determining and addressing root cause through in-depth problem solving to develop refined equipment, materials, processes, products, technologies, and/or scientific methods
  • Conducting effective technical research in the advancement of current and new technologies

Job requirements for this Senior Research and Development Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, material science or chemistry preferred
  • Master’s degree in engineering preferred
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in a minimum of two of the following disciplines:  process, product, continuous improvement, project, quality and manufacturing
  • Knowledge in materials and associated processes
  • Working knowledge of the use and application of chemical analysis laboratory equipment 
  • Experience in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication skills required, both written and verbal
  • Team player who collaborates well with others to drive results
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook and AutoCAD
  • Moderate travel to other sites and divisions; varies based upon business needs



Primarily an individual contributor role.  Capable of leading and influencing a team through complex technical projects from development to implementation.  Serves as a mentor and coach to others.
